This role offers the opportunity to lead and shape the design strategy across multiple high-profile federal digital platforms. You will guide a multidisciplinary design team to create accessible, user-centered websites while maintaining consistency, scalability, and innovation. The position blends hands-on design work with leadership responsibilities, ensuring cohesive user experiences and modern visual standards. You will translate research, analytics, and user feedback into actionable design solutions, driving engagement and accessibility compliance. Collaboration with developers, content strategists, and stakeholders is key, and your leadership will influence design excellence and user satisfaction across large-scale projects.
Accountabilities:
- Lead and mentor UX/UI designers, researchers, and illustrators, setting creative direction and design standards across all web and mobile platforms.
- Guide design reviews, ensuring consistency in components, typography, and color systems.
- Develop wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups in Figma and maintain a unified design system aligned with accessibility and agency standards.
- Conduct usability studies, tree testing, and A/B testing to refine site layouts and interactions.
- Collaborate with content, development, and QA teams to ensure smooth handoffs and alignment.
- Support responsive, mobile-first design principles and create page templates, icons, and interactive components.
- Integrate user research, journey maps, and analytics insights into iterative design processes to optimize user experience.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in website design, UX/UI, or digital product design.
- Proven experience leading design teams on federal or large-scale enterprise web projects.
- Advanced proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with USWDS and Drupal front-end patterns.
- Strong understanding of responsive design, accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG 2.2), and modern CSS grid systems.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills, including experience explaining design decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
- Experience with federal digital modernization or public health programs.
- Familiarity with AWS, Agile frameworks, and DevSecOps delivery models.
- Understanding of content governance, metadata, and taxonomy in Drupal CMS.
- Experience documenting design tokens and component specifications in Storybook.
- Portfolio demonstrating accessible, responsive, and clean design solutions for government or public-sector clients.
