Mechanical Design Engineer I

Position Purpose
As a Mechanical Design Engineer (MDE) at TAIT, you will be responsible for project-based work that focuses on specialized machinery and fabrications for the entertainment technology industry. You will work to gain a full understanding of TAIT safety and quality processes while also being aware of standard design principles and practices. You will be responsible for developing designs from concept through to detailed design. Additionally, you will be responsible for collaborating with all departments, rendering support to the production teams, project management, and management.
Essential Responsibilities / Accountabilities
- Understands and Drives TAIT safety and quality processes.
- Understand- Drives and applies advanced design principles and practices – some supervision required.
- Understands TAIT’s markets and competition and supports developing new solutions which may help bolster TAIT’s market position.
- Understand- Drive the development of new techniques and/or improved processes, documentation, or products. Familiar with company solutions across the range of disciplines.
- Understand- Drive project elements and/or small projects complexity/risk under supervision of Level III, SMD/SMDE or HOD.
- Understands- Drive resolving key technical issues and/or unique conditions by using expertise gained through real world application.
- Develop designs from concept to detailed design, design reviews, and release of production drawings.
- Produce overview packets to support client approval and internal communication processes.
- Utilize CAD tools and internal file structure to document designs properly.
- Understands- Drive production department with respective handover meetings from design, technical or commercial queries, update from red-lines, inspection – potentially including planning and supporting internal and external Factory Acceptance Testing and inspection visits.
- Support legacy equipment (potentially designed by others - internal or external), via the support department or through other routes.
- Understands- Drive TAIT design standards and approaches. Packaging assembly fit and finish.
- Utilize CAD platforms to create 2D sketches, hand sketch schematics, and draw full 3D models.
- Understand- Drive element/kit constraints (time, budget, org needs) within show related to other elements and client needs.
- Understand- Drive engineering tasks for projects. Point of contact for external engineering.
- Understand- Drive the underlying physics of complex problems.
- Understands- Drive capabilities of machining and fab including material selection for in house capabilities and outside vendors.
- Prepares client drawings for the project team, supervises and supports as necessary, checks and collates work package back in for submittal.
- Supports identification and definition of principles required to make efficient design decisions. Able to make design decisions with some support.
- Understand- support scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
- Understand- Drive plans, schedules, documents and activities for assigned elements or projects.
- Mentors and guides co- workers, team members and others both on technical as well as on a personal level (Continuous Professional Development).
- Provide specific and timely feedback & recognition to those for whom it is appropriate.
- May participate in interview process of new Design and Engineering staff. May support new staff through on-boarding process.
- Supports guidance relating to overall department objectives and high-level project matters, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
- Receives guidance on advanced engineering principles and practices.
- Supports appropriate oral and written communication skills, able and competent across the range of platforms used in TAIT (Outlook, Slack & Zoom).
- Occasionally interacts with clients, suppliers, external & third-party professional bodies & contractors. Routinely Interacts with colleagues (internally and externally to the department), and others. Represents the company at all times in a positive fashion whilst building rapport and demonstrating integrity and respect.
- Maintains good working relationships and instils confidence in colleagues throughout the organization at all levels.
- Supports inter-disciplinary project meetings as appropriate i.e., kick-off, post contract reviews etc.
- Continues building relationships across business with shared knowledge.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Attend meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required.
- Perform assigned duties according to the policies and expectations prescribed by the company.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate/ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, CADD, Technical Theatre, Architectural or Machine Design preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Design Experience: 2 + years
- Experience with 2D sketches and 3D CAD modeling.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

The employee regularly operates a computer, including typing, using a mouse or keyboard, and viewing the screen for extended periods.
While the role does not require regular lifting or physical exertion, there may be occasional onboarding programs or training opportunities that create opportunities for more exposure to physical tasks or new environments (sites, venues, etc.)
Work conditions of the role are:
- Work conditions may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions
- Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work within or visit areas where required. This includes safety glasses, reflective vest, ear plugs, safety toed shoes, and other PPE as required by the location.
